The Heart of Indian Coffee
Coorg, situated in Karnataka, holds 70% of India's coffee market share and is renowned for its exceptional climate and aromatic coffee beans. The coffee in Coorg is cultivated in a unique and unconventional manner, contributing to its distinctive taste and smell. It is grown under the shade of majestic Rosewood Trees, Wild Fig Trees, silver oak, and Jack Fruit Trees. This method, combined with traditional sun drying, imparts a tropical full-bodied taste to the beans. The coffees may be processed using either the natural or washed methods, known locally as ‘Cherry’ and ‘Parchment’, respectively, adding further diversity to the flavors.
Adequate rainfall of 60-80 inches and sunny weather are crucial for the growth of Robusta and Arabica, respectively. When rainfall is insufficient, irrigation through sprinklers ensures the plants receive the water they need. Additionally, temperatures between 23°C and 28°C create the perfect environment for coffee cultivation in Coorg. Arabica coffee beans are predominantly grown in Coorg due to the favorable climate.
